12 Injured in FlixBus and Semi-Truck Crash on I-5 in North County San Diego

North County Injury Lawyers

A serious crash involving a FlixBus passenger bus and a semi-truck on Interstate 5 in North County San Diego sent 12 people to the hospital Monday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 5:24 p.m. on southbound I-5 near San Elijo. CHP reported that 12 passengers aboard the FlixBus were injured and transported to local hospitals. Fortunately, the injuries were initially described as minor to moderate, with no life-threatening injuries reported.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

For passengers injured in a bus accident, however, even an injury initially described as “minor” can become much more significant in the days and weeks that follow. At North County Injury Lawyers, we represent people injured in motor vehicle and commercial transportation accidents throughout North County San Diego.

Bus and Semi-Truck Accidents Can Cause Serious Injuries

A collision between a passenger bus and a commercial truck presents a substantial risk of injury. Unlike occupants of passenger vehicles, bus passengers may not have access to seat belts and can be thrown from their seats or into other passengers, seats, windows, and other parts of the bus during a sudden collision.

Injuries may include concussions, neck and back injuries, fractures, shoulder and knee injuries, and other trauma. Some symptoms, particularly those associated with concussions and soft-tissue injuries, may also become more apparent in the hours or days following a crash.

Anyone who was aboard the FlixBus involved in Monday’s I-5 collision should pay close attention to new or worsening symptoms and seek appropriate medical care.

Who May Be Responsible for the I-5 FlixBus Accident?

CHP is still investigating the cause of the collision, and it would be premature to determine who was at fault.

Depending on what the investigation reveals, potential liability could involve the bus driver or bus company, the semi-truck driver or trucking company, or another person or entity whose conduct contributed to the crash.

Commercial transportation cases can also involve evidence that may not exist in an ordinary car accident, including driver logs, vehicle inspection and maintenance records, onboard electronic data, company safety records, and potentially video footage. Obtaining and preserving this evidence can be important when investigating how an accident occurred.

Injured Passengers Have the Right to Seek Compensation

A passenger injured in a bus accident generally has the right to pursue compensation against the person or company responsible for causing the collision.

Depending on the circumstances and severity of the injury, recoverable damages may include medical expenses, future medical care, lost wages, loss of future earning capacity, and compensation for physical pain, emotional distress, and the impact the injuries have on the person’s everyday life.

Importantly, passengers generally do not have to determine which driver caused the collision before speaking with an attorney. An experienced personal injury lawyer can investigate the accident, identify the responsible parties and insurance coverage, and pursue the claim on the passenger’s behalf.
