California Council Will Study E-Bike Safety Risks

North County Injury Lawyers

Over the last several years, e-bikes have experienced a significant rise in popularity throughout Southern California cities and towns, including Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Encinitas. Yet e-bikes have also been linked to a rise in personal injury rates, including serious harm that includes bone fractures and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). To be sure, the American College of Surgeons recently reported that e-bikes are linked to at least 20,000 injuries and 3,000 hospitalizations annually, and those numbers are likely underreported. Despite known risks, e-bikes continue to gain popularity.

Recognizing that these motorized vehicles may be here to stay, the California Independent Electric Mobility Council was formed in October 2025, and it will begin studying the safety risks associated with e-bike usage in the state.

Council Plans to Study E-Bike Safety and Injury Risks

The newly formed California Independent Electric Mobility Council, according to a report from California Public Radio, was created through a grant from Honda. The Council’s task will be to “study what makes e-bikes dangerous” while also assessing “how to make them safer without discouraging people from using them.” If e-bike popularity is going to remain, it is crucial for e-bike makers and riders alike to know how injuries can be avoided.

The Council is made up of a range of people, including trauma nurses, CalBike policy directors, and engineers, among others.

Filing an E-Bike Injury Claim in Southern California

If you were injured in an e-bike accident, or if someone you love was injured in an e-bike accident, you may be wondering about your options for filing a claim. The safety risks associated with these vehicles are well known, but that does not mean that another party may not be liable for injuries. To be sure, there are various circumstances in which another motorist, or even a bicyclist or another e-bike rider, could be responsible for a collision in which an e-bike rider has been harmed.

You should also keep in mind that California follows a “pure” comparative fault rule, which means that even if you were partially at fault for an e-bike accident in which you were injured, you can still recover damages from another party or parties whose negligence also played a causal role in the accident.

In order to file a claim, it is critical to get in touch with a personal injury lawyer in Carlsbad who can help you determine who may be liable for your injuries and gather evidence proving that party should be held responsible. Under California law, you will likely have only two years from the date of the e-bike accident to file your lawsuit, so it is essential to begin working on your case with an attorney as soon as possible.
