New Crash Test Dummy Addresses Car Accidents Affecting Female Vehicle Occupants

North County Injury Lawyers

Crash test dummies have been used in determining motor vehicle safety for Poway and other California residents since the 1970s, and the use of these objects has led to vast improvements in vehicle safety that have helped to prevent severe injuries in car accidents. Yet for more than 50 years, crash test dummies have only been modeled on male bodies, thus failing to take into account the types of injuries sustained by adult female vehicle occupants. According to a recent report from The Guardian, the “first crash test dummy in the US modeled specifically on female anatomy” has just arrived at the US Department of Transportation. As the article notes, now that crash test dummies are considering vehicle impacts and injuries to both male and female occupants alike, American officials expect to “close decades of safety gaps in vehicle testing.”

Given that studies suggest female vehicle occupants are “73% more likely than men to sustain serious injuries in a crash,” it is about time that researchers began addressing the types of car accident injuries that tend to affect women and alter their lives. Our Poway car accident lawyers can tell you more.

What is Different About a Female Crash Test Dummy?

For decades, researchers have known that female vehicle occupants suffer more serious injuries than men in many crashes, and they tend to suffer particular types of injuries. More specifically, female vehicle occupants are much more likely to sustain injuries to their pelvis or liver, which can often result in serious mobility issues and can be life-threatening. Despite this knowledge, for decades, the crash test dummy used to assess vehicle safety has been coded as “male,” a model that is based on a 5’9” man weighing over 170 pounds.

The new “female” crash test dummy is based instead on a typical female body to “ultimately enable better assessment of brain, thorax, abdominal, pelvic, and lower leg injury risk for small female occupants,” according to the report. The United States has moved to use this new female crash test dummy after several other countries have adopted similar models over the decade, such as Sweden and Australia.

How Women Can Seek Compensation After a Car Accident Injury Caused by a Negligent Motorist

Regardless of whether the automobile in which you were injured was designed with the safety of female occupants in mind, you may be able to file a Poway personal injury lawsuit against the negligent party who caused the collision and your resulting injuries.

Often, people injured in car accidents in Southern California will begin the process of seeking compensation by filing an auto insurance claim. If the insurance company cannot or will not provide a fair settlement — which is somewhat common — you can move onto filing a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver or any other liable parties. Under California law, most car accident lawsuits must be filed within two years from the date of the crash.
